This week, we recognize  National Stretching Day as a way to celebrate the importance of practitioner-assisted stretching. At Wynne Hires, we also celebrate the importance of stretching every day, throughout the day, (as long as you are physically able to do so).
The Inclusive Nature of Stretching
Whether your job means being on your feet all day or sitting at a desk, the importance of stretching can benefit everyone, and the great news is we can do this anywhere, with just a little effort and intention.  So, this holiday season, before the New Year’s resolutions begin, give your body and mind the gift of stretching as a regular practice, every day.
Risks of Sitting Too Long
Our bodies are made to move – not to sit in the same position for long stretches of time. As the nature of work has evolved, we have seen the negative impact of sitting too long, which can affect our health in many ways, including shortening our life span. Experts say too much sitting can cause back pain, neck pain, hip pain, and even shoulder pain. Experts recommend taking a break to move for 1 to 3 minutes, every 30 to 45 minutes, or at least once per hour.  To move more throughout your workday, take the stairs, park further away from the door, set an alarm to remind you to move during the day, use the restroom on a different floor, use a pedometer or activity monitor to keep track of your daily steps (aim for 6000+ steps per day), and if possible use a standing desk that allows you to change your position throughout the day.Â
Flexibility for All Ages and Lifestyles
Stretching on a regular schedule helps maintain and increase both flexibility and range of motion. It’s a simple yet powerful practice that caters to people of all ages and lifestyles. From the bustling professional to the dedicated stay-at-home parent and all stages of activity, incorporating a few minutes of stretching into our daily routine can make a world of difference.
Benefits Beyond the Physical
National Stretching Day is not just about touching your toes or doing the splits; it’s about embracing a holistic approach to wellness. Stretching has numerous benefits beyond the physical. It promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and improves overall mental well-being. As you stretch your body, you also give your mind a chance to unwind and reset.  Here are 4 easy stretches you can do right at your desk.Â
No Fancy Equipment Needed
One of the beautiful aspects of stretching is its simplicity. Unlike intense workout routines that may require specialized equipment, stretching can be done virtually anywhere, anytime. No need for a gym membership or expensive gear – just a quiet space, perhaps some calming music, and a commitment to prioritize your well-being. Here are 5 hand and wrist stretches you can do anywhere.Â
Making Stretching a Daily Ritual
As we approach National Stretching Day, consider making stretching a daily ritual. Whether it’s a morning routine to kickstart your day or an evening wind-down session, finding a consistent time to stretch can lead to long-term benefits. It’s a small investment in your health that pays dividends over time.
In Conclusion
As we recognize National Stretching Day, let's commit to the simple healthy act of stretching. It's a gift we can give ourselves every day, promoting not only physical well-being but also mental clarity and relaxation. So, whether you're reaching for the sky or touching your toes, embrace the power of stretching and let it become a cornerstone of your daily routine.
